Coromandel Coast is one among the former French settlements in India , now
styled as the Union Territory of Pondicherry. History reveals that all these
tiny pockets were small villages before the advent of the French. In these
areas, the French has thought a series of battles with their European rival –
the British – and Karaikal as sold to the French by Sarafoji Maharaja of
Thanjavur for fifty thousand chakras. Conquered by the British several times,
Karaikal was handed over to the French on 30th May 1814 along with Pondicherry , according to the treaty of Paris . It covers an area of 53 square miles
or 160 sq.km.
